Libidomania (1979)

"They say, love is a many splendored thing... and the fact of the matter has never been proven more entertainingly than in Libido Mania. Bruno Mattei, Italy's acclaimed master of the obscene, promises "sexual aberrations" galore and delivers them in explicit detail in this ultra-rare mondo shocker, slapping his unprepared audience with an onslaught of such colorful perversities that even the mere act of listing them gave the film its notorious reputation. Deservedly so – Libido Mania is pure rock’n’roll! Beware, however: You might see your sex partner in a different light afterwards...

The nausea of necrophilia. The dilemma of dildos. The sexiness of sadism. The truth about transsexuals. And the karma of coprophagia. Get ready for a rollercoaster ride into the darkest corners of human affection/affliction! Sigmund Freud meets the Marquis de Sade: firmly anchored to the moral code of its scientific approach (of course!), this film goes all the way to document the unspeakable in the most uninhibited fashion imaginable."

Libidomania is great for what it is, an ambitious and exploitive attempt to categorize and critique every manner of paraphilia in graphic detail, but it all has no shock value as most of the movie is comprised of dramatizations of different fetishists in action and different extreme angles on sexuality from around the world. You get some nice gory dramatizations such as a penile dismemberment (a great effect that beats the one in Cannibal Holocaust hands down), a sex-change operation, and a gut-slicing necrophiliac plus a woman wearing a prosthetic penis to stand in for a transsexual. Figure in some sleazy historical scenes like a nun getting head from a bishop, too. At least Mattei keeps it sleazy.

There's a definite attempt here to show a little of everything. There's an overused bit of mondo footage of African death rite and cannibalism that Mattei previously tried to insert into his bomb Hell of the Living Dead. The "extreme" makeup effects scenes are well-done and comparable to that snuff film scene in Emanuelle in America. Mattei even interjects a little scat, offal painting, a pairing of an adult baby and a lactating woman, watersports, and bizarre (some look made up!) paraphilias like a pervert who peeps on a woman's pee in a public bathroom and then goes in to have a sniff at her leavings when she's gone.

Libidomania tries to be a serious piece with nods to all sorts of authorities' writings, but it is basically a softcore (but extra kinky) sleaze vehicle. For a decidedly more mondo sleaze documentary give a look to Shocking Asia, but Libidomania certainly succeeds in being the more "well-rounded" and entertaining feature.

Vampyros Lesbos (1971)

Vampyros Lesbos (1971)
Genre: Horror | Erotic
Country: West Germany | Spain |
Director: Jess Franco

In Istanbul, the lawyer of Simpson & Simpson Linda Westinghouse has erotic dreams with a strange woman every night and her analyst Dr. Alwin Seward suggests her to find another lover. Linda is assigned to resolve an inheritance issue with the Hungarian Countess Nadine Oskudar that has inherited a real estate from Count Dracula. Linda leaves her boyfriend Omar in the Istanbul Hilton and travels to the Kadidados Island. While waiting for transportation in the continent, Linda is advised by a local that the island would be a place of death and insanity and she should not travel to there. However, she does not pay attention to the man and meets Countess Oskudar that is a lesbian vampire fascinated by Linda. The Countess drinks the blood of Linda and she has amnesia and is sent to a mental institution where Dr, Steiner, who is also a vampire expert, treats her and puts an advertisement in the newspapers...

It's not only another sleazy sexploitation horror of the 70's. It's much more, with its eerie soundtrack and stunning visuals, edited in the manner that would become a trademark in the 80's and later for such visual masters as Kubrick and Scott, or maybe Lynch rather. The plot may be a bit cheesy, but I think it's not the plot that matters - the main language fraco speaks here is the visual pop-art-esque language (today might be rather regarded as 'post-modern'). And the hypnotic performance by Soledad Miranda is worth remembering forever as well. It's a franco masterpiece, way ahead of its time. A must see!

The Curse Of Her Flesh (1968)

A man catches his wife, a stripper, cheating on him with another man. He runs away only to be hit by a car, resulting in his losing an eye and becoming paralyzed. He decides to take his revenge by hunting down and killing strippers. He poses as the owner of a strip club inorder to get close to his quarry.

"The Touch of Her Flesh" was pretty grimy, but its sequel manages to outdo it in every field. Its more depraved, more politically incorrect and offensive, more hilarious for the truly sick at heart, and considerably better made this time around (the slightly higher budget allows them to use actual synchronized sound, opposed to post dubbing). And while the plot is far from complex, at least there is a semblance of a story this time around. In other words, fans of vintage Grindhouse goodness will fall in love with this socially irredeemable piece of trash. However, both serious art buffs and especially feminists will quake in fear at it.

The Findley's "Flesh" trilogy is standard sexploitation from the time in some aspects, but its much more extreme and intriguing than many of its contemporaries. The bizarre sexual dialog is always hilarious despite the rampant misogyny thats bound to turn off some. My advice, don't take this trash too seriously (I'm pretty sure the producers didn't either). Also, its rather well shot, featuring some nice, Noir and expressionist style camera work. Plus, the murders are all very original. All in all, "The Curse of Her Flesh" is yet another trash classic in the trilogy.

Caligula Reincarnated As Nero (1982)

Director: Bruno Mattei & Antonio Passalia
Genre: Erotic | History
Country: Italy | France
Language: English

Caesar Neron indulges himself in any known debauchery including incest with his mother when his Empire slowly declines. Bruno Mattei’s “Nerone e Poppea” isn’t as outrageous as Joe D’Amato’s “Caligula-The Untold Story”, but still offers some delicious sleaze. There’s plenty of nudity and some nicely filmed lesbian sequences to keep fans of Italian sleaze entertained. Rudy Adams is wonderfully over-the-top as a crazy Neron and Patricia Derek is one of the sexiest women ever! There’s even a castration scene and some rather nasty torture sequences. A must-see for fans of sleaze!
